How To Give The Best Gifts For College Graduations

Getting the perfect graduation gift for people whom you truly care about is a difficult and expensive ordeal. For instance, a birthday present is an easy decision for the gift-giver because it comes around every year and you can redeem yourself the following year if you fail this time around. But college graduation is usually a one-time event for most people, and even when people return to graduate school, that graduation is never as memorable as the pride of accomplishment involved in the undergraduate graduation. So there is a lot of pressure on family members and friends when they have to pick a gift for such a crucial day.

As for me, my sister Laura recently graduated from Columbia University in New York. At first I was debating whether I should buy her a heavily loaded gift card to her favorite clothing store or give her a check that would be enough to put a down payment on a new Pontiac Solstice convertible. I would have been spending a lot of money that way -- maybe even more than I could afford -- and somehow that would translate in my younger sister's mind to show my passionate care for her. In Laura's mind I am the extremely successful consultant who makes six or seven figures per year, so she would have high expectations, right?

I was about to go with the Express gift card idea when I searched online for some last-minute gift ideas and stumbled across an amazing discovery. It was only a week until Laura's graduation at the Medical Center Garden at Columbia. I then thought of the bright idea of getting a personalized gift instead. After doing some reading and web surfing, I figured that the gift card would be used to temporarily satisfy her shopping spree urges; and the convertible would be nice, but the monthly payments would just burden her in the near future when she would be weighed down with college debt. On the other hand, a personalized gift would commemorate the event nicely, marking her name, the school's name and the year. It would be a gift that Laura would treasure forever.

Also, it would not just be any kind of personalized college gift. I wanted something serious and elegant enough to match the prestige of her Ivy League college. I graduated from a state university, but my preconceptions say that Ivy Leaguers have a superior air to them and they need to be treated with accordance. I did not want to disappoint my dear Laura who worked so hard to complete her studies at Columbia University.

So I bought Laura a set of personalized gifts: a personalized mirror and a personalized desk box. Both had beautiful paintings of her alma mater along with Laura's name and graduation year beautifully imprinted on them. I was excited for Laura's reaction to my special gift.

On Laura's graduation day, I hauled the two gifts over to my parents' house for the party. And I can say with pride that my graduation gift beat everyone else's who gathered for the graduation, including Laura's boyfriend's. It ended up that Derek the boyfriend got her a $500 gift card to Macy's. After seeing Laura's bland reaction to the gift card, I was glad to see that her face brightened up with elation when she laid eyes on the mirror and the desk box. I'm going to leave you with this quote from her: "These are the best graduation gifts ever! I wish more people would put the importance of the event before my constantly changing whims."
